We have to create a math program for the kindergarten class. Mrs. Lynch
wants us to follow the guidelines established in the curriculum for
ESL/Kindergarten. We have a copy of the curriculum for ourselves. The
program needs to focus on two main areas: the concepts of Perimeter and
Area, and the use of numbers and number manipulation. She has also been
working with her students on pattern recognition and would like for us to
incorporate that into our program. She also wants us to keep the numbers
used in our program less than 10, though the students do recognize numbers
in the teens. Working on shape orientation (recognizing that an upside down
triangle is still a triangle, for example) is also a possibility. Since
they recognize basic shapes, we could work on fitting shapes inside a
bigger shape to learn area (ex: if 10 small squares fit into a rectangle,
then the area would be 10). The class has one computer period per week, and they are more mouse-oriented than keyboard-oriented, so our program will cater to that. Finally, we have to keep in mind that these are ESL students. We need to keep the number of words used in this program down to a minimum, and use high-recognition words that the children can understand (ex: see, I, etc.) We might be able to incorporate slightly more difficult words as the children progress through the levels. Mrs. Lynch also wants to be able to print windows.
As of right now, we're undecided as to what we will use. We plan to
evaluate each of the tools available to us in the multimedia lab next week
and decide what will be best for us. |
