*rat room | After being led by the sewer-savvy Dr. Rat, you are led into his humble place of residence deep within the bowels of the sewer system. "I just love these high ceilings," he says, and then tells you that sewer tunnels are big enough to drive cars through, just to get an idea of how large pipes can actually be. Dr. Rat has a slick computer terminal with lots of tempting red buttons and flashing lights. He claps on his computer made of old vintage electronics and shows you on the screen a map of the underground sewer tunnels, shows you where you are now, and the path you have thus far taken. Dr. Rat also has access to a very special valve that when pressed, blocks off the downhill flow of the sewage. He invites you to press this button. You do, and mayhem ensues. On the screen pops images of households around Providence whose toilets are overflowing. The city is at a virtual standstill. This scene illustrates the importance of sewer systems and how we as a community depend on them for basic everyday living. |
