Dewey spends most of this chapter making a careful definition of an 'aim' and comparing it to results or ends. He finally actually applies this word to education. He stresses that teachers or parents can have educational aims, but education itself cannot have an aim. In sum, he defines an aim as "to have an aim is to act with meaning"
