April 27: Last Revisions

We've organized a testing date for this Friday at Classical. While we may not be able to test the entire piece of software, we will have a large chunk of it to show. We'll talk more about testing at our next meeting, which is Thursday night, but basically the plan is to divide the afternoon into two phases: individual and group. In the individual phase, we will sit down one-on-one with the kids and watch them use the software, asking them to think aloud as they use it. In the group phase, we'll sit down with a group of kids who have used our project and ask them to reflect on it together.

Once more the structure of our software has changed, but it looks like we may finally have a definite idea. For technical reasons, the routing demo is going to be the last to be implemented, meaning we may run out of time for it. However, what we have replaced it with time-wise is a lot more animation in the other modules. For the e-mail, the web, and the ISP modules, we'll have two modes (this has already been partly implemented, and it looks great!): the text-based and the more graphical/animated. So, for example, the user can choose to learn about e-mail by reading a document which starts with an illustrative graphic and then has the corresponding explanatory text. Alternately, the user can choose to see the animated version, where all of the parts come alive and the text is broken up and interspersed more with the graphics. By presenting the same material three different ways (graphic-only, text-only, and mixed-animated), we hope to appeal to many different learning styles.
