Using cards to write down how you are thinking about a particular program
seems to me to be a very useful first step. It allows you to shuffle various
components around so you can see if they look good next to each other, etc.
The next logical step in my opinion is to create a full-featured Rumbaugh
diagram based on your cards. This way you can have the whole design layed
out in one diagram, but you were able to use the cards to organize. The
disadvantage of starting with a Rumbaugh is that unless you have great tools
to help you draw, it is difficult to modify on the fly.
