Application to Graduate

When you're ready to graduate, be sure to fill out the "Application to Graduate" in Banner before April 30th. If you miss the April 30th deadline, you will not be allowed to walk at commencement or receive your diploma on May.

Progress Report

Once every year, students who have passed candidacy must submit a written update on their status. This form must be completed by March 1st. The form can be found here. Students must be logged in with their Brown IDs.

PhDs are strongly encouraged to use these tips as they prepare for both their Thesis Proposal and their Thesis Defense. These tips are designed to help ensure you have as stress-free proposal or defense as possible by avoiding pitfalls or mistakes others have encountered.

When you plan to defend

Post Candidacy Contract
Before PhDs schedule their thesis defense, they should first confirm that they have met all of the course requirements by filling out this form and submitting the signed version to Lauren Clarke.

Thesis Defense Checklist (PDF)
PhDs who plan to defend theses should use this form to make sure that they've completed the required administrative tasks especially communicating their desires for refreshments in a timely manner.

Thesis Defense Information
You can access this form on the Graduate School's website. It needs to be submitted to Lauren Clarke three weeks before your scheduled defense. A sample of the form can be found here to help guide you as you fill it out.

Thesis Defense Menu Confirmation (PDF)
This is a form (also in Excel) designed to help students plan and communicate their desired refreshments for Thesis Defenses.

This is a list of menu options for students who do not want to think too hard about the food for their Thesis Defenses.

Also on our radar is to develop a few Thesis Defense Menu options for students who may not have the time or the desire to plan the refreshments for their Theses Defenses.

A note about scheduling thesis proposals and defenses

PhD students need to give a 4-week advance notice for scheduling their thesis proposals and defenses and that there cannot be more than one of these events on any given day.
