B. Summary of External Advisory Board Meetings

The Center's original proposal stated that we planned to hold a meeting of the External Advisory Board (EAB) at least once a year. Our goal, though, has been to have two meetings a year, one in the fall/winter and the other in the spring/summer. Scheduling these meetings has sometimes been very difficult, due to the many demands upon the time of the EAB members. We are proud to say that we were able to meet our goal of having two meetings this year. The Center held EAB meetings on December 14, 1995 and on April 12, 1996.

At the December, 1995, meeting the Director brought the Board members up to date on the state of the Center. This included a briefing on the smooth transition between directors and the formation of the Director's Staff. Each Board member was given a copy of the Center's revised criteria for evaluation and asked to review these materials and provide feedback. The Director discussed the Center's proposed FY6 budgets and explained his vision of the role of the Director's Pool.

The meeting continued with a presentation of the Center's vision for its new multisite telecollaboration project to let the Board take part in shaping the project. This presentation included a discussion of the Center's overall strategic direction. Another topic was alternative sources for funding (since much of the Center's industrial support had dried up and DARPA would no longer be providing support through NSF). Board members confirmed that the computer graphics industry, in their experience, was not currently interested in funding academic research. Further topics of discussion were strategies for increased involvement of women and minorities in the Center and the rotation of Board members.

At the April, 1996, meeting Board members were told about a March PI meeting in Utah in preparation for the Center's upcoming site visit. The PIs and other Center researchers gave short presentations on each of the Center's research thrusts, specifically on how they intended to present this research at the June 1996 site visit at UNC. The Board members provided very valuable feedback on presentation content and format.

It should be noted that the EAB members' involvement with the Center does not end with their participation at EAB meetings. The Director calls upon members for advice and assistance throughout the year. For example, many EAB members provided valuable input on proposals submitted to the Director for funding from the Director's Pool, on a draft of a renewal proposal that was later withdrawn, and on preparations for the site visit at UNC.

C. Inventions, Patent Applications, Patents

This image shows developing brain structures in their geometric context. The MRI data rendered here contains a six-tuple of values at each point in space; the displayed features are extracted using goal-based techniques. The goals request accurate external geometry, distinct appearance of different brain tissues, and sufficient signal-to-noise to display features clearly. The data was produced by an MRI microscope at the Caltech Biological Imaging Center.
