Managed Utility Computing

Aad van Moorsel, Hewlett-Packard Labs

The Internet allows increasingly complex distributed applications, making the task of an IT operator or administrator prohibitively difficult. We argue in this talk for the necessity of a clean, standardized, service-centric software architecture to make future Internet applications manageable. We refer to the proposed solution as 'managed utility computing,' since it enables utility computing while increasing its manageability. In particular, we propose a web-services-based 'grid' architecture, with a particular focus on manageability features.
