The Session Initiation Protocol: Enabling Next-Generation Network Services

Erich Nahum, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center

The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is rapidly gaining adoption in industry as the open standard protocol for Next-Generation Networking (NGN) services. While SIP is most frequently known as the signaling protocol for Voice over IP (VoIP), SIP also enables many other applications, including audio and video conferencing, presence, instant messaging, and event notification. In this talk, I will provide an overview of SIP, how it is being used in industry, and some of the research issues being investigated by IBM.
