Designing Distributed Applications with Workflow, Messaging and Services

Steve Resnick, US Microsoft Technology Centers

When Web Services are used to implement complex transactions, transient state between service requests must be maintained within the service. The web service implementing the transaction is free to maintain state however it wants. Multiple transactions can further be aggregated into logical workflows that span people, processes and systems. Managing state in workflow is even more difficult since it must coordinate work across multiple services either within an organization or at Internet scale.

This session looks at new approaches for composing and managing complex workflow applications at internet scale. It presents features that will ship in future versions of the Microsoft Windows Operating System, code named Vista and Longhorn.
