The 37th IPP Symposium

Operating Systems Technology and Brown Alumni

Operating systems have been an essential part of the CS curriculum for decades; for the past 30 years it's been taught at Brown as CS167/169. This symposium highlights the work of alumni of this course, former students who also served as teaching assistants.

CS167/169 alumni have engaged in OS research and development -in every area of the field, for as long as the course has been taught. Their impact on file systems, networks, the core OS itself, and numerous other areas have been tremendous. Perhaps the most publicized research is DTrace, a system for debugging operating systems and their interaction with applications, developed by three Brown alumni at Sun, and winner of The Wall Street Journal 2006 Technology Innovation Awards contest.

In this symposium, several Brown Alumni at different partner companies, including the developers of DTrace, will present their OS research
