First meeting with Dr. DeGroot, Friday 2/7

The three of us, along with TA Paul, discussed with Dr. DeGroot her ideas for the project, and the potential approaches we could take.

Our audience:
Club DNA is an after-school science club that meets once a week (Wednesdays 3:30-5). The kids are bilingual, ages 7-10.

Dr. DeGroot’s vision:
- a website on vaccines that could link potentially to other websites as well; would include visual aids/animations
- kids could be actively involved in the creation of the project, such as drawing pictures that would be included on the site to help illustrate the concepts
- perhaps the software/site could be made expandable, so that future ClubDNA classes could add on to it
-content would cover what the students will be learning in class (although this is still somewhat ambiguous at this point)
- could possibly also include a game-like component that is more interactive
- potential approach: focus on one vaccine such as the flu shot (e.g.: what’s in the shot, what does the vaccine prevent, how does it work, are there side effects, etc.)

Next steps:
- revise project description
- meet with Dr. DeGroot next Fri. (2/14), 8:30am at Ocean
- meet with Club DNA on Wed. (2/18), 3pm at the French-American School

first group meeting! mmm... coffee.

- discussion re: a web-based vs. computer-based application. possibilities include a web page that utilizes shockwave animations, or focusing on a director cd-rom type application and pointing to the web for supplemental material (or vice versa)
- will this be a tool for the students at Club DNA, or a wider audience (e.g. via the web)
- will this be an updateable resource?
- what kind of teaching/learning tools can be developed beyond simply displaying information in the fashion of the online textbook
- how to present material for the range of student needs (K-12)
- addressing the social context of vaccines, etc.

Meeting with Dr. De Groot on Friday (2/7), 8:15am at Ocean's.
Meeting with Club DNA next Wednesday (2/12), 3pm at the French-American School
