A Motion-Compensated Filter for Ultrasound Image Sequences

Abstract:

Medical ultrasound images are an important diagnostic tool for physicians, but suffer from low image intensity, dropouts, and noise in the form of speckle. I propose a new method for filtering ultrasound image sequences which is based on a motion-compensated temporal filter. The key contribution is a new method for detecting and tracking image features which is fully automatic. Applying this algorithm in a motion-compensated temporal filter demonstrates its worth. The tracking and filtering algorithms together run at speeds approaching real-time on a standard scientific workstation.
