Artworks on Our Walls

Visitors to the CS Department over the summer will have noticed the gradual flowering on our walls of a very impressive group of art works. It’s the brainchild of Franco Preparata, whose connections with Brown’s art world enabled us to receive on loan a collection of the graphic works of Walter Feldman, long-time Brown Professor of Visual Arts, and his students. Happy 25th Anniversary, CS!

On September 18, 2003, John Crawford ’75 of Intel will kick off the Computer Science Department’s gala celebration of its 25th anniversary with his talk, “20 Years of Growth in Microprocessor Performance: A Look Back and a Glimpse Ahead”. John, one of the first concentrators in CS at Brown (back when it was merely a Program, not a Department), has achieved great prominence at Intel through his work on microprocessor architecture and is now an Intel Fellow and Director of its Itanium Architecture group. Firefighters

The CS92 "Firefighters" program, built last year in collaboration with Marcella Weinberg's 2nd graders at the Charles N. Fortes Magnet Academy Museum School in the Elmwood section of Providence, was recently featured on Intel's "Innovation Odyssey" web site (http://www97.intel.com/education/odyssey/day_319/day_319.htm). Devoted to innovative uses of technology in education, the Odyssey site noted how Brown students had worked with Weinberg's bilingual students to design, revise and produce a unique program about the history of firefighting in Providence.
