CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Awards

CRA's Outstanding Undergraduate Award program recognizes undergraduate students who show outstanding research potential in an area of computing research. Nominees are nominated by the department chair or a faculty member. Each department may nominate a total of two male and two female candidates. Preference is given to students in their senior year. In addition to evidence of significant research contributions, the committee also considers the student's academic record and service to the community.

CONGRATULATIONS to Daniel Licata, '04, for being selected as one of the six Finalists in the Computing Research Association's Outstanding Undergraduate Award for 2004 ...

Last Sunday, 11/16, The department's soccer team, Bytesoccer, became the champion of the Brown Intramural Fall 2003 Middle Division Outdoor Soccer League. After a tense game, they beat team Teddie Smooth 2 to 1. A penalty kick called against them at the start of the game initiated tension that built throughout (of course, everyone in the team agreed that it was a "wrong call":)). But ...

Artworks on Our Walls

Visitors to the CS Department over the summer will have noticed the gradual flowering on our walls of a very impressive group of art works. It’s the brainchild of Franco Preparata, whose connections with Brown’s art world enabled us to receive on loan a collection of the graphic works of Walter Feldman, long-time Brown Professor of Visual Arts, and his students. Franco and Eli Upfal selected these prints from a huge collection in Prof. Feldman’s office; as Eli remarked in a chivalrous email, “The pictures you like are Franco’s taste, I’m responsible for the rest ...

Happy 25th Anniversary, CS!

On September 18, 2003, John Crawford ’75 of Intel will kick off the Computer Science Department’s gala celebration of its 25th anniversary with his talk, “20 Years of Growth in Microprocessor Performance: A Look Back and a Glimpse Ahead”. John, one of the first concentrators in CS at Brown (back when it was merely a Program, not a Department), has achieved great prominence at Intel through his work on microprocessor architecture and is now an Intel Fellow and Director of its Itanium Architecture group. His bio may be found at http://www.intel.com/pressroom/kits/bios/crawford.htm ...

Firefighters

The CS92 "Firefighters" program, built last year in collaboration with Marcella Weinberg's 2nd graders at the Charles N. Fortes Magnet Academy Museum School in the Elmwood section of Providence, was recently featured on Intel's "Innovation Odyssey" web site (http://www97.intel.com/education/odyssey/day_319/day_319.htm). Devoted to innovative uses of technology in education, the Odyssey site noted how Brown students had worked with Weinberg's bilingual students to design, revise and produce a unique program about the history of firefighting in Providence. The Fortes School uses cultural history as a theme for ...

Van Hentenryck and Michel winners of CP2003 best paper award.

Pascal Van Hentenryck and Laurent Michel won the best paper award for their paper 'Control Abstractions for Local Search'about part of the Comet System featured in the last issue of conduit! (great timing, isn't it!). The paper describes novel control abstractions to simplify the development, compositionality, and reuse of local search algorithms. It builds on the constraint-based architecture presented last year at OOPLSA 2002. About 184 papers were submitted, 48 of which were accepted.

The conference is CP 2003, which is the Ninth International Conference on the Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming to be held in Kinsale ...

Herlihy wins 2003 Dijkstra Prize

We heard yesterday that Maurice Herlihy's paper on 'wait-free synchronization'is the 2003 winner of the Edsger W. Dijkstra Prize in Distributed Computing. The Edsger W. Dijkstra Prize in Distributed Computing is given to an outstanding paper on the principles of distributed computing, whose significance and impact on the theory and/or practice of distributed computing has been evident for at least a decade.

In this paper Herlihy developed a beautiful and useful theory of fault-tolerant computation in distributed systems where asynchronous processes communicate by accessing shared objects of arbitrary type. He showed that objects of different type can ...

Another CSer at Boston Cyberarts Festival

Gee, we're impressed: another CSer showed an artwork at the recent Boston Cyberarts Festival. Our April 10 news squib on this site talked about Selim Tezel's (MSc '02) computer-generated images in this show; now here's another CS artist!

Andrew McClain, a CS major and CS 15 UTA who completed his senior thesis on 'CaveSculpting: Creating sculpture from CavePaintings' and received his Brown B.A. yesterday, conceived and co-created 'Screen', a written-text virtual-reality installation featured in the Boston Cyberarts festival. Next year he will attend the MFA Acting Program at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.
