Accolades for Providence!

(We mean the city, not the TV show, though the TV show's been getting darn good ink too recently.) The December, 2000 issue of Money magazine rates Providence as `the best place to live in the Northeast', saying that, indeed, it's not unlike the `idyllic town with a clean, sparkling river, colonial-style homes and well-groomed lawns' that appears on TV. The article (to be found at http://www.money.com/money/depts/real_estate/bplive/providence.html) cites the environmentally and aesthetically sensitive new construction boom in Providence's downtown, including Waterplace Park and the upscale 150-store mall. And it gives raves to Providence's quality of life, adducing the low cost of real estate, the ease of getting around in the city, and the excellent restaurants. Brown has pride of place as the first cultural amenity mentioned, and the culinary school at Johnson & Wales and the top-rated Rhode Island School of Design also win kudos, as do the many theaters and entertainment venues. And, it points out, Boston is only 45 minutes north, and beautiful public beaches -- and Newport, with its Gilded-Age vacation `cottages' for the remarkably rich -- only 45 minutes south.

It's gratifying to have national recognition for what we residents have known for some time -- that Providence is numero uno in the Northeast!
