27th IPP Symposium slated for May 3

In the spring and fall, the CS Department's Industrial Partners Program sponsors a day-long symposium. Employees of member companies are invited to join CS faculty and students at the event. Member companies are: Compaq, EMC, Foxboro, GTECH, IBM, InterTrust, Latitude, MERL, Microsoft Research and Sun. The spring event will be hosted by Professor Michael Black on the topic "Vision-Based User Interfaces." Six distinguished speakers will give talks throughout the day. To see the schedule and abstracts, and to learn more about our Industrial Partners Program, please check out our website.

Abstract for symposium:

The combination of advances in computer vision with ubiquitous computing and wireless technologies provides an opportunity to develop new models for human-computer interaction. Our partner companies are actively involved in research to develop real-time vision systems that can detect, track, and recognize people and their actions. This research is enabled by advances in low-level vision (including stereo, motion, and segmentation) as well as high-level recognition of human activity (using statistical learning and probabilistic inference). This symposium will bring together scientists working at every level of this problem including image processing, recognition, and novel systems and user-interface research.
